I organize this discussion by genre—the lines that purport to divide literary texts and contexts. I do this in order to illustrate the degree to which Le Guin’s generic contexts evince the same narrative strategies to achieve or deny character relationships. It is as if, in these early novels, Le Guin discovered an important feature of “home” that would evolve over the course of her later work. I will pursue this idea in the next chapter. Among Le Guin’s novels with external narration, focalizers tend to be multiple in order to facilitate character connection and help us to appreciate the reasons and implications for holding isolating ideological positions.
