The guy [on the card] looked enough like me, but I had to shave the front of my hair so the hairline would match, and anyway he made me put on a baseball cap. Me and some other guy who was crossing too got into a car with two women, the coyotas I guess they were, good-looking women, and we just drove right up to the border [at Ciudad Juarez, Texas]. I was so nervous, but the girls seemed to know what they were doing, real calm like I guess they do that all the time. The border agent asked the girl some questions, she said we were going dancing in El Paso [in Texas on the US side].

But then, you know, these things are happening [globalization and privatization of public education], and here in Oaxaca it seems like we are the only ones standing up to that. Maybe the Movement has a lot of problems, but we’re the ones standing up, and maybe something will change… So, the echoes of the conflict serve as the sociopolitical backdrop of this study. The conflict in Oaxaca was not a case of random spontaneous combustion, but rather a progression of events that had their genesis in the political organization and historical inequalities in the state.

Everything my family has we have because we all know how to work hard. Carlos and his sister were the first in the family to continue their education past primary school. Thanks to the family’s increased economic mobility and income generated from the pottery workshop, his father’s extra job, and an older brother who migrated to northern Mexico to work in a maquiladora factory, Carlos was able to finish his undergraduate degree in English teaching. The degree was a relatively new one, and was not at all an obvious career for someone with Carlos’ background.
