Ou can’t expect a dog to do what you want him to do (or don’t want him to do) unless you show him what your expectations are. And your dog won’t learn properly or be willing to heed your commands unless you use effective training methods. In this part, we describe how to prepare yourself, the human part of the equation, for training: how to choose the right approach, how to adapt your methods to your particular dog, and how to establish yourself as pack leader. If your dog is still a puppy, we explain what a puppy goes through to help you understand what he needs both physically and emotionally.

Don’t train your dog when you’re irritable or tired. You want training to be a positive experience for your dog. If you ever get frustrated during training, stop and come back to it at another time. ” You’re unhappy and Buddy is unhappy because you’re unhappy. A better approach is to train him with firm kindness so both of you can be happy. An unfriendly or hostile approach doesn’t gain you your dog’s cooperation and will needlessly prolong the training process. When you become frustrated or angry, the dog becomes anxious and nervous, and is unable to learn (see Chapter 9).

After just a few repetitions, the puppies get the message and respond to a mere look or a curled lip from mother. The puppy learns dog language — or lip reading, as we call it — and bite inhibition, an important lesson. Chapter 3: Surviving the Puppy Period The puppies also learn from each other. While playing, tempers may flare because one puppy bites another one too hard. The puppies discover from these exchanges what it feels like to be bitten and, at the same time, to inhibit biting during play (see Figure 3-1).
