Be that as it may, Winnicott’s relationship with Melanie Klein always remained a kind of “love–hate”. He was in THE MAN AND HIS LIFE 23 six year’s control with her (1935–1941), and later he recommended Clare, his second wife, to choose her as analyst. The relationship between the two women seems to have been equally tumultuous. It was from the Kleinian ideas of “internal reality”, “depressive position”, and “manic defence” that Winnicott developed part of his theory. However in spite of recognising all that he owed her, he quickly became very critical of certain of her developments.

No one can break them up except yourselves and you can only do this while you are alive. If it should happen that you should die, then the grouping which is officially recognised in the nomenclature will become absolutely rigid and it will be a generation or more before the Society can recover from this disaster which will be a clumping based not on science but on personalities or even I might say on politics since the original groupings were justifiable but defensive constructs.
