It was from the Kleinian ideas of “internal reality”, “depressive position”, and “manic defence” that Winnicott developed part of his theory. However in spite of recognising all that he owed her, he quickly became very critical of certain of her developments.

Winnicott adds, “One may suppose that thinking, or fantasying, gets linked up with these functional experiences” (Winnicott, 1953, p. 4). So an “object” or “phenomenon” will gradually emerge for the infant, which might be a bundle of wool, the corner of a blanket or eiderdown, a word, a tune or a mannerism, which becomes vitally important to the infant at the time of going to sleep. The infant cannot do without it. But we cannot really say that he “loves” it. He uses it as a material sensorial support in an activity where we could say that he is dreaming the world, at 36 D O N A L D W.

I consider it to be of absolutely vital importance to the future of the Society that both of yourselves shall break up the groupings in so far as they are official. No one can break them up except yourselves and you can only do this while you are alive. If it should happen that you should die, then the grouping which is officially recognised in the nomenclature will become absolutely rigid and it will be a generation or more before the Society can recover from this disaster which will be a clumping based not on science but on personalities or even I might say on politics since the original groupings were justifiable but defensive constructs.
