La conséquence logique de cette démarche dont j ’ai moi-même tiré la leçon ne pouvait être que de renoncer tout à fait à formuler le problème anthropolo gique en termes de nature et de culture tant ces notions teintent le problème lui-même d’un eurocentrisme mal venu. C’est ce que Sahlins a fait sans hésiter dans ses travaux les plus récents, ainsi quand il écrit : « aussi enchanté que notre univers [celui des Occidentaux] puisse paraître, il est aussi ordonné par une dis tinction entre nature et culture qui n’est évidente pour à peu près personne d’autre que nous »36.
Si l’on souhaite trouver des exemples d’un emploi littéral de l’opposition de la nature et de la culture, ce n’est pas tant chez lui qu’il faut aller les chercher que chez des auteurs - eth nologues ou historiens - qui ont subi son influence, appliquant comme des recettes certains procédés élémentaires de l’analyse structurale sans vraiment mesurer à quel point celle-ci était insé parable d’une théorie moniste de la connaissance qui annulait en partie le dualisme de la méthode. Je n’en donnerai qu’une seule illustration, choisie à dessein dans l’anthropologie britannique où l’entreprise de Lévi-Strauss fût sur tout perçue comme un moyen d’échapper au fonctionnalisme de la sociologie durkheimienne sans renoncer pour autant aux principes qui la fondaient.
