Gaining everyone’s cooperation, especially the dog’s, was important. The dachshund did not think that people were coming to his rescue, but rather that they were threatening his existence. ” Charging down the middle of the street was his defensive response to the perceived danger that stemmed from a high level of fear and anxiety. Understanding the canine drive of that dog in that moment was critical. A drive is a dog’s natural instinct that motivates his actions and reactions to people, places and things.
Those valuable experiences left an indelible impression on me. My background has made me passionately interested in understanding people and animals. I always wanted to know who they were, what they needed and how I could help them. This fascination has come to shape and define me as a dog trainer skilled in knowing how to interpret canine behavior. I see myself as a coach in the role of helping owners and dogs change the dynamics of their relationships. While training is about creating structure and routines, and maintaining consistency, there’s no rule saying it can’t be fun.
Reading a dog’s behavior, not judging it, is how I coach an owner into understanding how dogs communicate with us. Too often dogs get mixed signals about their unwanted behavior. The dog that hasn’t been taught boundaries does as he pleases because he believes you told him it was okay. No limits were set. He’s on the couch, jumping on strangers or peeing in the house because he thinks it’s acceptable behavior. “No” may have been said, but how was it said and, more important, how was it heard? You may have told him not to do something, but did you redirect his behavior to a desired one?
