Large areas of Koranko territory were part of the Solima Yalunka state by the late 18th to early 19th centuries, but only insofar as these Yalunka could exercise a dominant influence and obtain regular tribute. The Solima Yalunka capital at Falaba and consequently capital of the state was destroyed by the sofa forces of the Mandinka empire-builder, Samori Turay [Toure]. Many states in the Sierra Leone interior in this same period were run along similar lines. There was another large state among the Biriwa Limba peoples led by Alimamy Suluku later in the 19th century.

He was born in Freetown and educated at the local CMS Grammar School and at Fourah Bay College.
