In a few moments we met the first of the other women coming from the opposite end of the net, and the trap was set. For me, it was a truly unique experience. I had always hunted alone or with other men. Women were the beings who cooked what the men killed and brought back to camp. But here the hunt depended on the skill of the women and their knowledge of the psychology of the animals they hunted. The results at the net would thus in large measure reflect the efforts of the women and not just of the men who mindlessly butchered whatever animals the women sent their way.
On their peregrinations, and usually cook their food wrapped in leaves and placed on the red-hot embers. They occasionally, however, get cooking pots from the village near which they are camping. The Pygmies generally settle down near some small brook in the midst of the forest, and erect small huts for the married people, boys and girls merely making themselves small shelters by bending down small saplings and covering them with leaves. The huts are very small, being about four feet in height and a beehive shape; long thin sticks are made into a rough framework, and covered with green leaves....
But within moments the first drive was over, and it turned out that the mboloko I heard was the only animal killed. We quietly walked another mile and the nets were set up once more. This time I found myself waiting expectantly with AnĀ juway and his wife, Sefini, who guarded their net together. For the moment, Kachelewa had apparently taken his position someĀ where else. Anjuway ran a finger over the sharp edge of his rusted iron spear and muttered something about having nobody to help him except a woman and a Muzungu (in many African languages the word for a European or fair-skinned person of any origin except an African albino).
