W •' FIG. 5. Flight onto hands onto the apparatus. FIG. 6. Flight onto feet onto the apparatus. FIG. 7. Flight off hands off the apparatus. FIG. 8. Flight onto hands over the apparatus. CHAPTER V The Fundamental Body Action of Bending and Stretching and stretching, or curling and stretching of the body takes place in all movable joints of the body. It is a funda mental way of moving due to the anatomical structure of the body. The action of bending might be defined as, the bringing together of two parts of the body on either side of the joint or joints involved.

The spring-board can be moved further away from the apparatus or another piece of apparatus added to give greater length to the flight. It is also possible to fly over apparatus where the vaulter does not touch the apparatus at all. T h e parts of the body receiving the weight will be either the legs, after some form of jump (which are strong and able to carry the weight safely from considerable height), or the arms followed by the shoulders and spine. T h e danger in the former will be in catching the feet on the apparatus after the "take-off" and during the flight, thus the height and width of apparatus must be increased very gradually according to the ability of the girls to spring and their confidence, and not what the teacher would hope for, which does sometimes happen.

Situations are needed where the movement continues, leading to a transference of weight after that initial twist, which should be taken to the full extent before the transference of weight, to give flow and continuity to the action. Since transference of weight is involved it is perhaps better to take twisting with a class after they have some ability in transferring their weight in various ways (see Weight Transference). Some suggestions where the experience of twisting may be given Lying on the floor, stretched out, rolling over and over to ensure the feeling of continuous movement.
