It was a beautiful spot, right alongside the lake, with the road at the back of the field and the guest house nearby. But there was only one electricity plug for the whole place; in summer there were so many extension plugs in it that it looked like a cactus, and then there was a flagpole in the middle advertising the place, and that was it. ‘He bought it from a guy called Michael Werner … Fritzl got it at a knock-down price because there had been trouble flogging it before. They signed the deal at the lawyer’s and Fritzl said he thought Werner’s eyes were going to pop out when he paid for the property in full – in cash – just like that.

Just as the Nazis he admired made their subjects feel better about themselves by thinking the worst of others – in their case, the Jews – Fritzl bolstered his ego by putting Rosemarie down from the start. She was lazy, she was slovenly, she was getting fat, she was getting dowdy; her sister Christine said the insults were never-ending and all aimed at putting himself above her. She was a classic study in abuse – a woman who suffered in silence, as her daughter would later suffer, as all her children, in one way or another, suffered.

He tells, in his own words, of a criminal case that was the simplest to solve and yet, at the same time, the most heartbreaking he will ever have to work on. The final chapter of this book has yet to be written: Josef Fritzl must be declared either mad or bad. The former will ensure his captivity in a secure mental institution, the latter a trial and the certainty of years behind bars – for the remainder of his life, without question. Whatever his destiny, it will never be as grotesque as the one to which he sentenced his own daughter and his incestuous offspring.
