In this context, the distinctions among the variants collapse into a series of symbolic equivalences. Whether the theft myth concerns game, vegetables, nuts, or tobacco, we may conclude that the manifest content of all versions of the myth narrates a contest between a hero and a numinous being over the possession of food. In keeping with Charles Ducey’s (1979) interpretation of the shamanic ritual drama, the myth may be interpreted as a symbolic expression of a boy’s contest with his father over the possession of his mother, his original source of food.
