Although mathematicians, physicists, and engineers were essential, the best of the groups also contained physiologists, biochemists, psychologists, and a variety of representatives of other fields of the biochemical and social sciences. Among the outstanding members of English mixed teams, for example, were an endocrinologist and an X-ray crystallographer. Under the pressure of war, these mixed teams pooled their resources and focused all their different insights on the common problems. This does not prove though that we actively repress conflictual thoughts as Freud suggested when he spoke of the dynamic unconscious. But even this concept finds growing support in case studies but also in laboratory research reported about by neuroscientists. Neuroscientists have identified different memory systems, some of which are unconscious, which mediate emotional learning. The hippocampus, which lays down memories that are consciously accessible, are not involved in such processes. Therefore, no conscious memories are available and current events can “only” trigger remembrances of emotionally important memories.
Klein pioneered the technique of play analysis – the use of a set of small toys as a substitute for the technique of free association. Through observation of the play, the depths of a child’s inner world could be reached by making immediate interpretations about the child’s earliest feelings and unconscious fantasies, many of which have made an important contribution to our understanding of early separation anxiety. Within the framework of the existing metapsychology, Klein added on and redefined highly relevant aspects of the early development of the psyche and to the technical repertoire of psychoanalysis (Klein 1935, 1946).
