My own exploration has revealed that 'P. framesii' mostly occurs in association with P. punctatus and does not appear to exist independently of it, that there is no significant barrier of sterility between them and that they are connected morphologically in several localities by a range of intermediates. Thus, if careful collecting is done, many plants will be found that cannot be placed unequivocally under 'framesii' or 'punctatus'. In the light of this information, there seems to be no option but to consider them as varieties of a single species and that is the approach taken here.
