This was the southern rebel leaders. These first step toward lasting peace meetings led to a peace in Sudan. THE PEACE AGREEMENT Sudan’s civil war ended on January 9, 2005. That day, the Sudan government and the SPLM signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. It took years of discussions for these two sides to find agreement. It calls for an end to fighting. It says all government soldiers must leave southern Sudan. It also aims to return war refugees to their homes. This should be completed within six years.
Bin Laden’s al Qaeda group later directed the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Al Qaeda and other groups gave the government money. In return, they got a safe place to live.
