Having received an invitation to deliver the Charles Eliot Norton lectures at Harvard, Eliot decides to go to the USA without his wife, provoking a deterioration in Vivienne's always precarious mental state. Robert Sencourt recalls (1971) that when Eliot is on his way to Waterloo Station to catch the boat-train, he suddenly finds that Vivienne has hidden some of his most important papers in their flat. The papers are hastily retrieved (a page boy climbs through the bathroom window) and Eliot is able to continue his journey.
Finally, in a letter signed 'Your outraged Possum' Eliot registers his disapproval of the fact that Pound devoted more space to reviewing After Strange Gods ('an unsatisfactory attempt to say something worth saying') than to The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism ('an unsatisfactory attempt to say a variety of things most of which were not worth saying').
