Having received an invitation to deliver the Charles Eliot Norton lectures at Harvard, Eliot decides to go to the USA without his wife, provoking a deterioration in Vivienne's always precarious mental state. Robert Sencourt recalls (1971) that when Eliot is on his way to Waterloo Station to catch the boat-train, he suddenly finds that Vivienne has hidden some of his most important papers in their flat.
