Do not put any blankets in the crate at first. It is important to let the puppy get used to the bare bottom of the crate; it will keep him cool and he will become very comfortable in it. If you keep a blanket or towel in the crate, the puppy will learn that he can go to the bathroom on it and then just push it to the side so he still has a clean area to rest on. He will learn just the opposite of what you want—that it is okay to go inside the crate. First thing in the morning, release your puppy from the crate and take him directly outside on leash.
