Dogs make such remarkable companions for humans that wasting their talents seems nearly criminal. Though I would be the first to admit that I’m probably more dogobsessed than most (I not only love their company, I make my living writing about them, after all), everyone should aspire to a good, workable level of interspecies communication. As veterinarian, animal behaviorist and dog trainer Ian Dunbar points out, dogs are animals with a variety of natural behaviors. They chew, they dig, they bark, they pee and poop.
When you open up the channels of communication, you will find that you possess more influence over your dog’s behavior without having to resort to punishment of any sort. Good news, indeed, to all but a few inveterate drill-sergeant types. Certainly, good news to our dogs. Do not be swayed by arguments of the extremists of the animal rights movement that it is cruel to “impose our will” on our canine friends. Is it cruel to toilet train your children, to advise them to say “please” and “thank you” and to equip them to play well with others?
Use your neutral word (the B in your vocabulary) to let the dog know this isn’t reward-worthy behavior, and try again, keeping the treat lower. When the dog folds into a sit as soon as you hold your hand out, you can add the word you want the dog to connect with the action. Say “sit” (or whatever you’ve chosen), hold your hand out in the same motion but without a treat in it, click or say the keyword when the dog sits and reward. It’s that easy. As Ian Dunbar has pointed out in his columns, a dog that is sitting can’t be jumping up on people, running out open doors or getting underfoot.
