Power is an analyst with a major financial services company. This duality enables them to bring scholarship to bear on the major contemporary issues, but also infuses their analyses with insights derived from the world of business. Although aimed primarily at a student audience, this book deserves a far wider readership. It attempts, with some success, to bridge the gaping divide between theories of global political economy and case studies of African economic development. Most studies of African economic progress since independence are atheoretical and concentrate on describing the poverty and limited development successes.
This explains why British capital was still pouring into beef ranching in Argentina and crop plantations across Africa even as farmers closer to the core (including famously those of the Mid-West in the United States) might have felt as though they were being crucified on a ‘cross of gold’. This juxtaposition suggests that, when commoditisation begins, it starts in the higher-cost core nations first and eventually radiates out to the lower-cost periphery. But as the West advanced through the dynasties of value-adding in the 20th century, slowly but surely those nations whose economies were stuck in the First Dynasty found themselves falling behind.
