The suitable state for such self-analysis is that of “free-fluctuating attention”, indicated by Freud and taken up by Berne (1972). The therapist has, therefore, the elements available to pass to the subsequent phase. CHANGE IN TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS 29 Hypotheses phase On the basis of the data gathered, the therapist can formulate a diagnosis of the situation of the patient on two levels: (a) structural–intrapsychic: historical and phenomenological diagnosis of the ego states, diagnostic identification of the script, individualisation of defence mechanisms; (b) relational–functional: behavioural and social diagnosis of the ego states, recognition of the type of transactions and of stroking, games, and script sequence.

It will be a lake in the case of a short therapy, which I have previously defined as “repairing”; it will be a sea, in the case of a “reconstructive” therapy; finally, it will be an ocean in the case of a true “analysis”. In each case, one should not confuse the ship with the element: the lake, the sea, and the ocean each has its own mechanisms of operation. The unconscious and the defence mechanisms, expressed by transference and countertransference, by psychological games, and by what is said, from an intersubjective point of view are expressed in a “sloppy” way, and it will be the ship guided by the therapist that points it in the right direction.

I introduced the fourth rule (2002) to remedy the non-applicability of the first three of Berne to unconscious communication: the first because it applies only to the transactions guided only by the social level; the second because it does not deal with crossed transactions; the third because the psychological level is not directed at the Child or at the Parent of the therapist, in other words, because the aim is not to confirm the script, but to succeed in communicating something unacceptable.
