Exchange attendance (sankin kotai) used to be one of many primary associations of Edo-period (1603-1868) Japan and some of the most strange examples of a approach of enforced elite mobility in global background. It required the daimyo to divide their time among their domain names and the town of Edo, the place they waited upon the Tokugawa shogun. in response to a prodigious volume of study in either released and archival fundamental resources, travel of responsibility renders trade attendance as a lived event, for not just the daimyo but in addition the samurai retainers who observed them. past exploring the character of go back and forth to and from the capital in addition to the interval of enforced bachelorhood there, Constantine Vaporis elucidates--for the 1st time--the importance of trade attendance as an engine of cultural, highbrow, fabric, and technological trade. Vaporis argues opposed to the view that cultural switch easily emanated from the heart (Edo) and divulges extra advanced styles of cultural circulate and creation occurring among the domain names and Edo and between far-off elements of Japan. what's commonly known as "Edo tradition" in reality included components from the localities. from time to time, Edo acted as a nexus for trade; at different occasions, tradition traveled from one zone to a different with out passing during the capital. accordingly, even those that didn't without delay perform trade attendance skilled a global a lot greater than their very own. Vaporis starts off via detailing the character of the journey to and from the capital for one specific large-scale area, Tosa, and its males and is going directly to learn the political and cultural meanings of the processions of the daimyo and their large entourages up and down the highways. those parade-like events have been replete with symbolic import for the character of early sleek governance. Later chapters are enthusiastic about the actual and social atmosphere skilled through the daimyo's retainers in Edo; additionally they deal with the query of who went to Edo and why, the community of actual areas within which the domainal samurai lived, the difficulty of staffing, political strength, and the day-by-day lives and intake behavior of retainers. eventually, Vaporis examines retainers as vendors of tradition, either in a literal and a figurative experience. In doing so, he unearths the importance of go back and forth for retainers and their id as shoppers and manufacturers of tradition, therefore offering a multivalent version of cultural switch.

A messenger from the castle town dispatched advance requisition orders for travel services to the post stations about five to six days before departure. Then, one to two days before departure, a list of lodging assignments for retainers was forwarded to the post station inns, along with the daimyo’s placards, by a magistrate charged with that duty. The rectangular, wooden placards, which are preserved today in considerable numbers in local historical museums, were displayed at entrances to post stations and at the official inns where the lord and his top officials were to stay, thereby notifying all passersby of the elite status of the principal guest.

In Nanbu the day of departure was similar to New Year’s Day. 52 Symbolically, a larger portion of the retainer corps accompanied the lord upon departure than would actually complete the trip to Edo. An indeterminate group of retainers saw the lord off by accompanying him just a short way on his journey. In Chōshū one group of officials not making the trip to Edo accompanied the lord until the point where the procession made its first rest stop at a teahouse designated for that purpose. 53 In Okayama, where the first leg of the journey from the castle town was made by boat, the main retainer corps lined the banks of the Asahi River, which ran through the castle town in a north-south direction, while the senior advisors accompanied him down the river as far as its outlet at Kojima Bay, in the Inland Sea.

Some traveled light and relied upon the inns for nearly everything. Others brought along their own foodstuffs and utensils for its preparation. In the latter case, domainal kitchen officials built a place to prepare food near the official inn and used the labor of cooks in the domain’s employ, and sometimes local commoners as well, to assist in the preparation of the food, perhaps not an efficient way to provide for the procession. Moreover, by consigning all food preparation to the inns, domain officials did not have to negotiate directly with villagers.
