In most endemic areas of the world worm burdens in the domestic dog are usually less than 200 worms (Gemmell et al. 1987), but in Turkana, Kenya, this figure is much higher and worm burdens of up to 30000 worms are not unusual (Macpherson et al. 1985). It is the concentration of the dogs in the home with the women and children which is thought to be responsible for the increased incidence of hydatidosis amongst Turkana women (Macpherson 1983).
