Nationalist politics in Kenya followed a pattern that was to become only too familiar a feature of African politics in general. Harry Thuku was elected president of the KCA, defeating Joseph Kang'ethe, but soon he was found both too arrogant and too moderate. Kang'ethe and Jesse Kariuki formed their own breakaway party also calling itself the KCA. There were allegations of misapplying funds and Thuku brought a court action against his critics.

There was a dramatic fall in congregations and school attendance and parents turned to schools started by the Kikuyu Independent Schools Association and the Kikuyu Karing'a Educational Association in order to conduct education independently of the missions. These schools, whose educational standards were often considered questionable, were to prove in time to be prime generators of nationalism outside European influences. ,2 The highly emotional topic of circumcision radicalized the Kikuyu youth and provided the KCA, for the first time, with mass support.
