Traditional religions with ancestral cults, magic and secret societies still exist in parts of tropical Africa, but have been eradicated or often overlain by Islam and Christianity. Islam, which entered Egypt in AD640, spread rapidly westward, but took some time to penetrate south of the Sahara. From the late-eighteenth century its influence spread into the Sahel and Savannah zone of West Africa, whilst on the eastern coast of Africa Islam flourished due to regular contact with Arab traders. Since the Second World War it seems that the spread of Islam has continued, particularly into southern parts of West Africa, which during the early colonial period were strongly influenced by Christian missionaries.
However, by 1945 ODN had little to show for the massive expenditure. Despite the pilot schemes, inadequate knowledge about soil and agronomic conditions had resulted in a general failure of the initial stages of the irrigation project before the Sansanding barrage was even completed. The colonists who had arrived had difficulty tilling the land with the tools provided, and many of the settlers were Mossi people who came from a very different environment where floodland cultivation was not Africa’s people 39 particularly significant.
Farmers, for example, will often walk long distances to get to their farms, their journey to and from work sometimes taking two or more hours in each direction. It is not uncommon for farmers to leave their village before dawn and return after dark. In areas where rotational bush fallowing is practised, the farm may be in a different location each year. Movement between rural villages is also common, particularly where markets attract sellers and buyers from surrounding areas. Rural people may also leave their village to assist with agricultural work such as cash crop harvesting in other rural areas.
