Over the succeeding centuries, however, the rising tide of Islam had forced the empire to retreat into the more remote central and southern portions of the Ethiopian highlands. Already in the seventh century, Eritrea was overrun by Muslim tribes from the north, a loss which would never really be made good and which today appears to be permanent. From many points of view, Ethiopia in the early 1800s was [a weak] state with serious internal problems and little visible cohesion. It was not, however, like many other areas of Africa, the home of a mere conglomeration of more or less closely affiliated tribes.
When in 1828 he overstretched his army by sending it off on two successive wide-ranging campaigns in opposite directions, while himself staying at home in the royal kraal, his enemies decided to act. On 24 September 1828, in a scene reminiscent of the demise of Julius Caesar, Shaka was stabbed to death by his two half-brothers. The Zulu kingdom did not die with the autocrat, however, but continued to function as a regional power in southeastern Africa until the 1880s. It is difficult to take a measured view of Shaka and his career, since historians’ assessments of him differ so greatly.
Each of the district governors of Ashanti boasted a ceremonial stool of office, which embodied the ties of kinship that bound together the people of his area. Now an all-embracing golden stool existed, which sought in the same way to bind all of the peoples of all the districts into one unit. The state also sought to instil a sense of nationalism into its subjects through songs and rituals that stressed the idea of a common origin. Another even more potent unifying instrument was the national army.
